MANILA, Philippines, February 18, 2011 – Clients of PLDT may no longer worry about the security of their vehicles and other property on the field.
In an intensified effort to provide security to its corporate clients, PLDT has announced its VIP Protection Program. The VIP program is short for “Vehicles with Intelligent Protection” and is powered by PLDT FASTrack, a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Global Positioning System (GPS)-enabled asset security and tracking solution.
Jovy Hernandez, vice president and head of PLDT Corporate Business Group, said the increasing number of vehicle-related crimes like theft, abduction, and carjacking have caused apprehension among many people, including corporate executives.
“The FASTrack VIP Program aims to provide businesses with affordable FASTrack packages that will equip corporate executives, employees and their vehicles with an M2M technology solution designed to combat the threat and ill-effects of criminal activities targeting vehicular assets,” said Hernandez.
The easy-to-deploy FASTrack VIP solution will focus on delivering three benefits: first, it will help companies secure their vehicles through the device’s alarm and motion sensing features; second, it will allow tracking of assets with superior accuracy using satellite-based technology; third, users can avail of the Immobilize tool, which allows the driver to take control of stolen or commandeered vehicles by shutting down the engine remotely.
PLDT FASTrack will use PLDT and Smart’s strong connectivity and nationwide coverage, enabling fleet managers, security departments and vehicle users to gain visibility and control over their vehicles from anywhere in the Philippines.
“With our intent to offer affordable FASTrack VIP packages for as low as a P999 monthly or an upfront scheme of P13,000, we expect more corporate clients to adopt global-leading asset management technology to make sure their assets are secured, productivity is enhanced, and costs are reduced,” added Vic Tria, vice president and head of PLDT Corporate Business Solutions.
“FASTrack was especially designed for PLDT’s corporate clients. It combines GPS, GSM (mobile network) and Tramigo Landmark Data (TLD) containing Philippine geographical information into one device,” said Arto Tiitinen, president of Tramigo, the Finnish company that manufactures the tracking unit used for the PLDT FASTrack VIP Program.
Business owners and vehicle users can operate FASTrack on their own, using any portable communication device such as a mobile phone, laptop or tablet. The service allows reporting of vehicle alarms and location data directly to owners. Being a stand-alone device, FASTrack doesn’t need a hosted server. It is therefore very private and more secure.
Vehicle owners can receive alarm information in easy-to-understand text via SMS, or using map visualization through Google Earth.
“The device itself is very tough. It can operate using two power sources and two GPS antennae and withstand the roughest of conditions as it is made from military-grade material,” said Tiitinen.

4 Companies Looking to Buck the Transportation Technology Status Quo
Peloton Technologies – Vehicle to Vehicle Communication
Based out of California, Peloton Technologies is pioneering the use of vehicle to vehicle communication to tackle two of the trucking industry’s largest problems – fuel and safety. By using radar sensors, intelligent braking, video screens, and a wireless link, Peloton makes it possible for two trucks to connect in a “platoon,” or “closer together than would normally be safe“.
The two trucks are able to get as close as 20 feet from each other while platooning in order to take advantage of fuel-saving aerodynamics. Peloton reports fuel savings of 10% for the second truck and 4.5% for the lead truck in a platoon. The trucks are able to get this close thanks to Peloton’s active safety system which wirelessly links the trucks. The wireless link controls the truck’s acceleration and braking, while radar detects potential dangers up ahead. The linked trucks react within a “fraction of a second” whereas a truck driver needs up to two seconds to react to changes in conditions. While the wireless link controls acceleration and braking, drivers still have complete control of the truck. Even while trucks aren’t platooning, Peloton is making trucking safer with the use of video screens in cabs to monitor blind spots.
Peloton is also currently developing a network operations center which can coordinate trucks “seeking a platooning partner…even trucks from different fleets.” The network operations center will also collect data on driver fatigue and vehicle maintenance.

KeepTruckin – Electronic Logbook App
Software applications are also shaking up the transportation technology industry by making once mundane, paper-heavy tasks quick and electronic. A new product in the trucking industry, KeepTruckin, is a mobile app logbook designed to let truck drivers “quickly and easily enter their hours on their smartphone.” In the past, truckers had to record their hours on paper logs, then either mail or fax them to dispatchers. As the DOT’s rules for Hours of Service became more complex, drivers and fleet managers needed a new way to manage their logs. However, the KeepTruckin app is more than a way to monitor driver hours. The app will automatically let drivers know if they are in danger of Hours of Service Violations, helping fleets improve their CSA scores. Also, the app allows for fleet tracking and load status monitoring for dispatchers to effectively stay on top of their fleet’s whereabouts.
These electronic tools are making tasks that used to require paper data entry quick and efficient while also providing companies greater visibility. Check out KeepTruckin’s video to learn more about the app allowing truckers to maintain their logbook easier than ever before.
Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience – New Concept Trucking
Back in 2005 Walmart vowed to double their fleet efficiency by the end of 2015. A hefty task for a fleet of 6,500 trucks, 55,000 trailers, and 7,000 drivers. But, they’ve done a great job, improving efficiency by 84.2% in that timeframe. However, Walmart has one idea that will not only help them reach their efficiency goals, but also transform the trucking industry forever. Collaborating with Peterbilt, Capstone Turbine, and Great Dane Trailer, Walmart has created a new concept truck – the Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience.
Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon said the W.A.V.E. “is a means to shake up the way things are done in the trucking industry” as it combines many revolutionary ideas in tractor and trailer design. The advanced concept tractor has a streamlined, aerodynamic body, thanks to the driver’s seat placed in the center of the cab. Furthermore, the tractor has a microturbine-powered series hybrid electric drivetrain, “programmed to find the most efficient balance between its turbine and electric drivetrains.” The trailer is equally as advanced, made almost entirely of carbon fiber, and weighing 4ooo pounds less than a normal trailer. The sidewalls and roof are single, 53′ long pieces, held together with advanced adhesives, eliminating the need for rivets. Finally, the trailer has a convex nose which maintains cargo capacity and improves aerodynamics.
While the Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience is still a prototype, Walmart is not only attempting to improve its own fleet efficiency, but also advance the future of the entire trucking industry with this application transportation technology. Staxxon – Shipping Containers
Staxxon brings a fresh perspective to an old problem in the logistics industry. For decades, empty cargo containers have led to inefficiencies at ports. Staxxon hopes to bring a sustainable alternative to normal, rigid cargo containers by producing vertically folding, retrofitted containers. Staxxon’s goal is to “reduce the number of container ship movements as well as intra-state truck movements at ports related to empty containers.” These foldable containers will reduce the “cost and inefficiencies involved in moving empty intermodal containers.”
Staxxon folds containers vertically by collapsing the doors of the container and pushing the outer walls of the container in towards each other. With this method, five empty, collapsed containers can fit into the same space as one normal, non-folding container. Retrofitting old containers to be collapsable rather than designing and building completely new containers is another hallmark of Staxxon’s sustainable business model.
With an idea as simple as folding containers, Staxxon shows that you don’t have to build intricate software or design new trucks to have a huge impact on the logistics industry. In the least, 3PLs must understand these emerging technologies so that one day they may integrate into logistics service providers‘ company practices to better serve customers.
The logistic industry is going through a time of rapid and unprecedented transformation. The future of logistics is paved with innovation and technology. It was not long ago that ideas like 3D printing, the Internet of Things (IoT), drone delivery, and augmented reality were things of science fiction. Today, the industry is cautiously adopting these technologies to provide faster, cheaper, more reliable and sustainable delivery. At the same time, their customers – primarily the manufacturers and retailers – are wasting no time urging their 3PL logistic providers to integrate these technologies into their service.
Here is a look at the cutting-edge technologies that are likely to have a lasting impact on the future of logistics and supply chain management, and what they mean to 3PL companies and their customers.
4 Emerging Technologies Shaping the Future of Logistics
3D printing as an idea is not new; it has been floating around for many years. However, it was only in recent years that the idea became a reality. This technology makes it possible for manufacturers, businesses and individuals to print exact working replicas of parts and products using metals, plastic, composite materials, and even human tissue.
According to 3PL Selection and Contracting Survey conducted by EFT, over 40% of the manufacturers and retailers questioned expect their 3PL providers to have some knowledge/expertise on 3D printing. But what do people who run 3PL companies think about the technology? The EFT study revealed that 19.2% of manufacturers and retailers are already using 3D printing in their businesses. However, only 1.5% can provide expertise knowledge and services. Only 2.6% of those surveyed have comprehensive knowledge and know-how and plan to provide the services, 1.5% have complete knowledge, 12% have some knowledge and 7.5% plan to have knowledge and provide services.
The Internet of Things (IoT)
This revolutionary technology allows devices to communicate with each other within an existing internet infrastructure without human intervention. Its application in the future of logistics is expected to increase speed, decrease waste and reduce overall costs.
The study found out that 26.25% of 3PL companies are currently using machine-to-machine (M2M) technology and 46.62% plan to deploy them in the future. When asked about the impact of IoT on logistics and supply chain management, 47% said they believe it will have a tremendous impact while 49% said that it would have some impact. Only 3% said that it would have no impact.
Amazon caught a lot of attention when it announced its plan to use drones to deliver products to customers. Since then, many companies have announced their plan or are considering the idea. But skepticism is still widespread as this use of a new transportation mode in the future of logistics. The study found that a whopping 27.31% of people believed that the chance of drone delivery as a reality in the next 5 – 10 years is very slim. 5.88% think that drone delivery will never happen.
However, not everyone in the study by EFT is so skeptical of drone delivery. 27.31% of survey respondents believe drone application in shipping will occur only in highly specialized areas, such as delivering drugs to remote locations. 36% of respondents believe that there will be some form of drone delivery in 5 – 10 years and 6.3% believe that it will be commonplace in 10 years.
Without a doubt, drone delivery faces many challenges just as every new technology in its infancy does. A significant number of respondents (35.71%) believe that regulatory issues will be the main difficulty while 23.95% believe that it will be safety issues. 11.334% of respondents think that the cost of creating a network will be the biggest challenge, 10.92% believe that it will be reliability issues, 10.08% think it will be weight and size limitations and 2.94% think it will be technology issues.
Thirty-one percent of manufacturers and retailers want to see logistics companies use drones for product delivery. But are the 3PL companies ready to adopt the technology? The study found that only 1.5% of the companies can provide expertise, knowledge and service while 1.5% of businesses have comprehensive knowledge and know-how, and plan to provide the service.
Google’s vision of driverless electric vehicles has had a lot of people predicting that the future belongs to self-driving vehicles. Such a vehicle is equipped with electronic eyes and ears and capable of navigating without human input. Its application in logistics can make an enormous reduction in costs. But are 3PL companies ready for this cutting-edge technology?
The study found that 42% of manufacturers and retailers would like 3PLs to have some knowledge and expertise of driverless vehicles. However, 0.75% of the 3PL companies can provide expert knowledge and service while 1.5% of them have comprehensive knowledge and expertise and plan to provide the service. On the bright side, 12.78% said they have some knowledge, and 6.02% said they planned to have knowledge and services.
These statistics show that while manufacturers and retailers want to see logistic companies adopting emerging technologies, the 3PL companies themselves are taking a cautious step in that direction.
